To maintain control under an authoritarian government, numerous values are suppressed or manipulated:

  1. Freedom of Speech and Expression: Totalitarian regimes typically suppress dissent and control public discourse, limiting individuals’ ability to express opinions or criticize the government.

  2. Political Freedom: Political opposition is often banned, and elections, if held, are not free or fair. The regime monopolizes power, eliminating pluralism.

  3. Individual Liberty: Personal freedoms, such as the right to privacy, freedom of movement, and freedom of association, are heavily restricted.

  4. Rule of Law: The legal system is often subordinated to the regime’s interests, leading to arbitrary arrests, lack of due process, and politicized judiciary.

  5. Human Rights: Basic human rights, including the right to life, freedom from torture, and freedom of thought, conscience, and religion, are often violated.

  6. Truth and Information: The regime controls media and information, spreading propaganda and censoring dissenting views, which undermines access to truthful information.

  7. Equality and Justice: Discrimination and favoritism based on loyalty to the regime can become widespread, eroding principles of equality and justice.

  8. Cultural and Intellectual Freedom: Artistic, academic, and cultural expressions are often censored or co-opted to serve the regime’s ideology.

  9. Moral and Ethical Values: The regime’s actions, such as surveillance, repression, and violence, can erode societal moral and ethical standards, fostering fear and mistrust.

  10. Economic Freedom: The state may control the economy, limiting private enterprise and individual economic autonomy.

These values are often replaced by loyalty to the state, conformity, and fear
